Small firm, big challenges

When Brian Galligan steps into his Des Moines law office each morning, he carries the weight of his clients' most devastating moments. A trucking accident that paralyzed a father of three. A medical procedure gone catastrophically wrong. A workplace injury that destroyed a career.

As president of Galligan Law, he leads a team of three attorneys and one paralegal fighting for justice in personal injury and medical malpractice cases across Iowa.

"In a small firm, overhead's a big deal," Galligan says. "In personal injury law, revenues are not consistent. It's up and down and can be a real stressor and challenge to run."

The challenge becomes particularly acute when dealing with the cornerstone of these cases: medical records. Each case might involve thousands of pages of medical documentation filled with specialized terminology that can make or break outcomes.

"I didn't go to medical school," Galligan explains with a wry smile. "For me to understand the medicine in a case is critical to my effectiveness for my client."

The firm initially tried having staff create medical chronologies – summarizing and organizing records into digestible formats. The results proved frustratingly inconsistent. "That's really problematic when you have a human who doesn't have a medical background doing it," Galligan notes. Errors or misinterpretations could potentially undermine case strategies.

Seeking better quality, they turned to specialized outsourcing services. While this improved consistency, it introduced another challenge: substantial costs that directly impacted already tight margins.

"All of a sudden, AI lands on the world like a bomb," he recalls. "The legal profession started asking: what can this do for us? What can this do for our practice?"

Rather than rushing to adopt the first AI solution available, Brian took a methodical approach to finding the right technology partner for his firm.

"I was determined to spend money on the front end to learn what these tools were doing and how they might fit until I found one that made the most sense for our law firm."

Brian tested multiple AI solutions, including:

  • General tools like ChatGPT to explore AI capabilities
  • The AI features built into their existing case management system
  • Several legal-specific AI platforms that had entered the market

Why Supio stood apart from other options

After thorough evaluation, Brian chose Supio for several key reasons:

✓ Superior Technology: "The technology, the way it responds, and the flexibility we have in using Supio has been key."

✓ Comprehensive Capabilities: What started as a tool for medical chronologies quickly expanded: "Then it became, wow, we can really use this to analyze all the documents in a case, help us synthesize information, and tie it into the medical records."

✓ Continuous Improvement: "What impresses me the most is they're not resting on the product they have, but listening to users and making changes as we move forward, creating enhancements that just make it better."

✓ Medical Knowledge Integration: "Understanding the medicine and being able to ask questions and get that information without having to go to Google is huge. Having it right there next to the medical records is key to being a better lawyer for my clients."

Brian adopted a forward-thinking approach to implementation: "My view early on was we're going to be on the front end of this wave. We'll spend money trying different AI options until we find one that works. I don't want to be playing catch up when the time comes."

This proactive stance positioned Galligan Law to gain maximum advantage from AI technology while competitors were still evaluating whether to adopt it at all.

Transforming the whole practice with Supio’s AI

"One of the biggest impacts for me is time savings," Brian emphasizes.

Specific examples include:

✓ Deposition Preparation: "I think of how I prepare for depositions now. I have documents in Supio that I can synthesize, ask questions about, and get information quickly. It's saved me hours of time preparing for a deposition of a trucker in a trucking case."

✓ Real-time Support During Proceedings: "If I'm sitting in a deposition and a question comes up, I can pop that into Supio and get the information I need right there on the fly without thumbing through a notebook."

✓ Litigation Document Creation: "When I'm drawing up lawsuit papers and I need numbered allegations by date, I can ask it to create that, then put it into my complaint as part of the initial filing."

Connecting dots across complex cases

Supio helps the firm develop deeper insights across various case elements:

✓ Comparative Analysis: "I was able to pull in all the reports from the state trooper, compare them to my accident reconstruction expert's evaluations, and develop questions that I might have eventually found on my own - but it would have taken me hours of reviewing everything."

✓ Witness Testimony Review: "I've used it for comparing deposition testimonies of various witnesses to ensure consistency. It's done a great job with that."

✓ Medical Knowledge Translation: "It provides simplified explanations of medical terminology. We're most effective when we can take complex medical information and simplify it to a level where we can explain it to a jury who might not have a high school education."

Small firm with big firm capabilities thanks to Supio

For a small firm like Galligan Law, Supio provides structural advantages:

✓ Staff Efficiency: "Having AI, having Supio has been an equalizer in a lot of ways. I don't need the huge staff that necessarily a large firm has to get the same analysis and outcome for all the information we're processing."

✓ More Strategic Focus: "I have more time to devote to other cases and to think strategically instead of just processing information. That's really valuable."

✓ Central Analysis Tool: "It's becoming the first place I go to analyze new information that comes in on a case."

FEATURE SPOTLIGHT - DEEP DIVE AI ASSISTANT

Supio's Deep Dive AI Assistant lets attorneys instantly query their case data with natural language prompts. Ask specific questions about your case and receive precise answers with direct source links to documents. The visual interface highlights connections between medical records, testimony, and exhibits for a comprehensive view of your case.

The entire team has embraced the technology:

✓ Associate Adoption: "The other main attorney in my office is a younger lawyer. She was very keen on our push toward AI and has embraced it wholly – even better than I have in some ways."

✓ Staff Adaptation: "My staff is getting there. As they learn that it's making their jobs easier, it's only going to get better."

Trust in analysis beyond human limitations

Beyond efficiency, the quality and reliability of information has improved:

✓ Confidence in Analysis: "Without Supio, all of us would be in a difficult spot going back to the way things were. It would be much more time-consuming and we'd have less confidence in the information we're getting."

✓ Essential Workflow Tool: The firm now considers Supio an essential part of their practice, with Brian stating that removing it would "put us into a difficult spot in terms of going back to the way things were done."

Future-proofing the practice

Galligan is particularly excited about Supio's newest feature, Case Economics, which extends AI analysis beyond medical records to financial documents. "The new financial piece that analyzes medical bills and expenses will be a huge time saver for my staff. Having confidence in that information is amazing," he says.

Case Economics addresses another labor-intensive aspect of personal injury cases: calculating and organizing expenses to determine appropriate damages.

The core medical records capabilities continue to improve with each update. "As it gets better at reading and processing medical records, it can only make our lives easier," Galligan notes.

The right AI partner amplifies client results

Their methodical evaluation process yielded concrete outcomes that directly benefit clients: significant time savings, enhanced case analysis, improved information quality, and a competitive edge that wasn't previously possible for a three-attorney practice.

"I have great confidence that we landed in the right place with Supio," Galligan confirms, reflecting on their journey.
